Flower Creations for Deliver the Dream of Broward County

Field of Flowers had the pleasure of creating floral arrangements for the Deliver the Dream 8th Annual Denim & Diamonds Gala held on October 29th. This has been a remarkable year for Deliver the Dream, an organization that helps families suffering from a serious illness or crisis to regain strength, mend spirits and "just be a family again" through three-day retreats. The event, held at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Ft Lauderdale raised $300,000! We are inspired by everyone involved, and so happy to have contributed and been a part of this (though bummed we didn't win any diamonds -- maybe next year). Here is a peak at the stunning rose arrangements: long stem red roses dripping like diamonds over the edges of champagne flutes.

Each year, thousands of sailors and Marines are sent on assignment alone to Afghanistan, Iraq, horn of Africa, Guantanamo and other areas to fight the Global War on Terrorism. Since 9/11, over 90,000 sailors have left their assigned units or commands to deploy individually or in small groups. They are usually assigned to Army units to fill specialized roles that the Army has either trouble filling or has limited expertise. Little or no ceremony marks their deployment or return. Often, with very little notice, IA’s (Individual Augmentee) are asked to head to unknown territories, face unknown enemies and spend over a year away from their homes and families. On the 6^th, Field of Flowers will be donating wrapped roses to go out to the spouses of the IA’s that are being honored and we would like to say to all of the honorees, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

The Boca Raton Forum recently posted a nice article about Field of Flowers. We are very proud of our designers and their designs...

The Annual Social Directors’ Roundtable, a gathering of social directors at country clubs throughout South Florida, held their annual event at Maggiano’s of Boca Raton. Highlighting the event were centerpieces donated by Field of Flowers.

Social directors from Aventura to West Palm Beach met to discuss ways of encouraging the public to use the country clubs as venues for their weddings, anniversary parties, quinces and other milestone events and parties.

“More than 50 people representing more than 30 country clubs came to this event,” said Linn Bak, major accounts coordinator for Field of Flowers. “It was an ideal way to showcase our creativity and make a great impression on the club directors."

Field of Flowers designers were given the opportunity to be imaginative, and the result was a wide variety of centerpieces and room décor. “This was exactly what the planners had in mind,” said Bak. “They encouraged us to go ‘all-out’ and we did just that.”

"This was a great group of people, dedicated to making special events truly unique and memorable,” said Donn Flipse, president of Field of Flowers. “We were happy to support their efforts and show them how extraordinary flowers and creative centerpieces fit that mission perfectly.”

Flowering facts about Mistletoe……

Mistletoe is known as an evergreen parasitic plant. It attaches itself to old Apple, Lime, Ash and Hawthorne trees burrowing its roots deep into the roots of the tree and sucking up its nutrients. Mistletoe has been around for centuries and used throughout different cultures, the Druids believed that it could perform miracles, from providing fertility to humans and animals to curing diseases and protecting against witchcraft. Although unsure where the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe came from some believe that it was the Vikings association with the plant and their goddess of love, Frigga. Others think it’s the ancient belief that it’s related to fertility. However it came about, the “proper” mistletoe etiquette is for the man to remove one berry after he kisses a girl. Once all the berries are gone, no one can kiss under that plant again. For those that follow the “proper” ways it is said to bring good luck to them.

South Florida Flower Businesses To Merge

Two 20-year-old flower businesses in South Florida are combining operations to reduce costs in an economy where flowers are less of an impulse buy. Field of Flowers, which has retail stores Boca Raton and Davie, and wholesaler Tradewinds Wholesale Florists said Tuesday that they would merge operations. Tradewinds will become the wholesale department of Field of Flowers, moving into its Davie store, said Field of Flowers founder Donn Flipse.

Flipse said the combination of the two floral companies makes sense in today's economy. By merging operations, they will reduce rent, electricity and insurance cost; and can share flower buyers and drivers to pick up imported flowers at Miami International Airport. They'll also save on office operations such as accounting and human resources, he said.

Flipse and Tradewinds co-owners Jim, Barbara and Bill Bensen began talking about a merger in the spring. The merger "creates what we're calling a flower market. It will be attractive both for the public and for the trade buying flowers in wholesale quantities," Flipse said. "We look at it as a new type of store."

Field of Flowers employs 80 people and Tradewinds has 11 workers. No employee layoffs are expected due to the merger, Flipse said. "Both our companies are growing, so we don't expect there to be any reductions."

Consumers also will benefit in flower prices, Flipse said. "Between buying in bigger volume to negotiate lower prices, we should be able to reduce prices to customers by 10 percent," he said.

Both flower companies' sales have been down about 15 percent in the past two years from their peak of 2007. "The economy forced us to look at ways of being more efficient to serve our customers better," Flipse said.

Jim Bensen, whose family has operated Tradewinds since 1990, said the merger will enable Tradewinds to expand its wholesale business into new lines, such as floral supplies.

"We're excited about it. We'll be able to bring more products into the South Florida market," said Bensen, who with his sister will stay on with the combined companies. He said his brother Bill, who was the company's accountant, will not continue working for the merged businesses.

Flipse and the Bensons have had a long-time business relationship. Jim and Barbara formerly managed the wholesale division of The Exotic Gardens, a 75-year-old florist owned by Flipse and his family until it was sold in 1989.

This is second acquisition for Field of Flowers since last year, when it acquired a Miami-Dade County flower business.

FLORIDA STATE FLORISTS ASSOCIATION HONORS FIELD OF FLOWERS CEO WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

My friend Donn Flipse, president and CEO of Field of Flowers, was recently honored by the Florida State Florists’ Association (FSFA) with the Jeanne Parsons award for his dedication and good name in the floral industry.

Jeanne Parsons, was known throughout the South Florida flower industry for her unwavering devotion to the floral industry. After dedicating more than 28 years to the industry, in 1988, Jeanne lost her battle with cancer. The regional associations adopted the Jeanne Parsons Award in her memory to honor florists that share her passion and commitment to the industry.

In 1972, Flipse joined The Exotic Gardens, which was founded by his Scottish grandfather, Jimmy Donn, in 1914. Flipse worked at Exotic Gardens as a child, especially around the holidays, then full time after graduating from Dartmouth College. When The Exotic Gardens was sold in 1989, he founded Field of Flowers, based on the “fresh flower superstore” concept. The headquarters for the South Florida company is based in Davie, Florida. There is an additional store in Boca Raton and in Miami. Field of Flowers delivers flowers throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and southern Palm Beach counties.

“I am truly humbled by being recognized by the FSFA,” said Flipse. “To receive an award dedicated to Jeanne Parsons is truly special because of my relationship with Jeanne and her daughter during there years at Exotic Gardens. She was a warm person, loved by everyone, and also an extremely talented florist.”

Lily Celebration!

Lily flowers or lilium candidum was known to be the most significant flower symbol for Christians and that they indicate purity. In Greek poetry, lily flowers signified tenderness and they were also referred to as the voice of muses. There is even a Greek myth that says how lily was born from the milk of the goddess Hera. The first description of lily flowers can be traced back from the Chinese Middle Ages, where lily plant blossoms until late autumn and there were three shades, which include red, purple, and yellow. In Europe, lily flowers were also used as remedy for many kinds of sicknesses and diseases. But, you should be careful if you have cats as pets as lilies can be poisonous to them.

One of our favorite times of the year here at Field of Flowers is our Orchid Celebration, which runs January 16th-January 31st. This is time of the year that we celebrate one of Mother Nature's most beautiful creations, the orchid. One of the most common orchids that's used in the floral industry is the Phalaenopsis orchid, which is commonly used in weddings. There are over 60 or so species in its genus, so working with these flowers can be a joy for a floral designer since there are so many variations of this beautiful flower.

The Phalaenopsis orchid is found in the rain forests of southeast Asia and northern Australia. They thrive in the warm, humid and damp conditions often found in that part of the world, but are flexible enough to be grown indoors and will grow in different light conditions. The plant that produces these amazing flowers is beautiful as well. Most of the Phalaenopsis producing plants can bloom all year long, but its peak time for flowering is spring and summer. A gift of a Phalaenopsis orchid plant can be a gift that gives all year long…

The hybrid of the Phalaenopsis orchid is also widely used in the floral industry, often to make bridal bouquet. Some of the more popular hybrids are the Cottonwood, Oregon City, and Snow City varieties. Like the standard non hybrid Phalaenopsis, there are a lot of gorgeous variations of the hybrid, such as the Brother Kaiser hybrid that has beautiful and exotic yellow petals with a smattering of little red dots on them. Also there is the eye pleasing Brother Little Spotty that is often eggshell white with little pink dots on the petals that look like fairy dust sprinkled on them with love from Mother Nature.

Helianthus is the scientific name of the sunflower. It is a combination of two words Helios, meaning sun and Anthos, meaning flower.

The sunflower plant can grow from 3 to 18 feet tall.

There are more than 60 different varieties of sunflowers in the world. The most common is the bright yellow with the dark brown centers, however new varieties of sunflowers are being created in colors the range from orange, tan, maroon or striped petals with green or yellow centers.

In 1986 M. Heijmf grew the world's tallest sunflower that was 25" 5.5" tall in the Netherlands.

Sunflowers seeds are used in a lot of everyday products such as medicine and paint. They are also rich in oil, which are stored as a source of food energy. Sunflower seeds are also crushed to give us oil, which is used for cooking.

Sunflowers require only 90 to 100 days from planting to mature.

Kansas City has been nicknamed "The Sunflower State" and is the national flower of Russia.

A well-known characteristic of sunflowers is that is flowering head tracks the sun's movement; this occurrence is known at "heliotropism."

The largest sunflower head has been grown in Canada, it was 32.5"

The Bonsai technique has been used to create the shortest sunflower, it was just over 2" tall.

Hydrangea flowers are very beautiful and often fragrant.

Hydrangea’s colors can range from white to blue, to pink to purple and green. This is determined by the acidity level of the soil.

Designer perfumes and colognes can be expensive. Here's a few quick and easy steps to create your own fragrances at home.

1) When choosing the flowers you would like to use for your perfume or cologne pick flowers that are just about to bloom. This allows the flower’s scent to be at it's most fragrant. Stronger smelling flowers are best to use, however using more subtle scented flowers will work just fine.

2) After the flowers have been chosen, chop about 2 cups worth of flowers and add into a large bowl. Add 4 cups of spring or distilled water and make sure all the flowers are completely submerged. Place a lid on the bowl and let it sit overnight.

3) Strain the water & the flowers through a piece of cheesecloth. This will remove all excessive plant material in the water. If you are using a subtle scented flower repeat step 2 with new flowers and the same water. Once completed place water in a pot and bring to a simmer, reduce liquid until only 2 tablespoons remain.

4) Add 5 tablespoons of vodka into a small dark colored glass container. Add the 2 tablespoons of reduced liquid to the bottle. Close the bottle and gently shake as to incorporate the vodka and the reduced flower liquid. Allow mixture to sit for 72 hours. If the scent is too strong, just add 1 tablespoon of water and allow to rest for an additional 24 hours.

How to Create Your Own Hand - Tied Bouquet!

Hand–Tied Bouquets are very popular, and easy to make. A single type of flower such as roses can be used or it can be a variety. Greenery such as ribbon grass can be placed around the edge for a fuller look.

Here’s how it’s done:

1. Hold a few flower or foliage stems tightly in one hand
2. Add each successive stem in a spiral fashion, with the stems crisscrossed in your hand.
3. Once you have placed all your flowers, and while still holding the bouquet in one hand, tie your bouquet with string, ribbon or raffia at the point where the stems come together. (This can be a bit tricky, but gets easy with practice.)

Now you’re done! This yields a bouquet in which the stems flare out, giving room to each flower, as opposed to typical bouquets where the flower stems are parallel. A hand-tied bouquet makes a great gift for someone who has a lot of vases. Recipients can simply drop their bouquets right into a favorite vase, with no need to arrange them.

There are various kinds of ribbons that can be used to embellish any arrangement or bouquet. Flowers, ribbons and bows often go hand in hand.

The graceful movement of ribbon adds interest and detail to any bridal bouquet and rarely does a floral gift go unadorned by a decorative bow.

Holiday wreaths and garland often benefit from the addition of a fancy bow. The colors and textures of ribbons must be chosen carefully so as to be compatible with the compositions they are accenting.

One type of popular ribbon is curling ribbon, which is very narrow and will curl into loose ringlets when pulled firmly across a sharp edge, usually used for tying balloon bouquets.

One of the most popular ways to cut the ends of your bow once you have chosen the right ribbon is called, Fishtail Cut, which is an indented "V" shape on the tails of your bow - this adds a nice touch to any arrangement or bouquet! (The image above shows a Fishtail Cut.)

One Period of Design that is still used today, is called the Biedermeier also know as "The Classical Revival."

This design originated in Germany about 1815. The Biedermeier focuses on symmetry and straight lines. The flowers are put in containers such as metal or marble mounts and placed on pedestals or columns.

Plants are commonly known for converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, but certain plants are also good for ridding our air of indoor contaminants.

Three common types of household toxins are Benzene-based, Formaldehyde-based and Trichloroethylene-based.

Some sources of Benzene-based toxins include detergents, plastics, tobacco smoke and synthetic fibers. A few of the best plants to remove these toxins are the Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), Gerbera Daisy and Alglaonema (Chinese Evergreen).

How To Make Your Cut Flowers & Arrangements Last Longer:

Is light important?
Yes. The more light the better, but be careful of too much heat from direct sunlight or strong indoor lights.

Is humidity important?
Yes. Flowers prefer a humid environment. Avoid drafty spots near air conditioning vents which tend to dry out flowers.

Do cut flowers need a clean environment?
Yes. The vase should be absolutely clean. Always use “flower food” with a germicide and remove any foliage below the water line to avoid bacteria growth.

Is “flower food” important?
Yes. It provides the nutrition the flowers would receive if they were still on the plant.

Should I cut the stems of my flowers?
Cut off about 1/2” of stem with a sharp knife, preferably under water, before placing them in your vase. When cutting stems, be sure not to “strip the bark” from the stem because It protects and extends the life of the flower.

How else can I prolong the life of cut flowers?
Leave on as many leaves as possible, but not below the water line. And remove yellowing leaves to keep your flowers looking fresher longer.

You may be wondering when and how flowers became a symbol of Valentine’s Day. Well, there are many myths surrounding this question. One story dates back to the 17th century. Every year a daughter of Henry IV of France would throw a party in honor of St Valentine. Each lady who attended the gathering would receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers from her valentine. This is because plant life can help reduce the level of common indoor toxins that lead to illness. According to some research, indoor plants are known to increase individuals’ problem-solving skills, reduce noise levels, decrease temperature and lower humidity. Plants are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. You may not be aware, but indoor air quality is generally more polluted than outdoor air quality and with people spending a majority of their time indoors, this can lead to illness and even death. Green plants, through a process known as photosynthesis, use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. They also remove carbon monoxide and Formaldehyde from the air, improving the indoor air quality (IAQ). With the presence of more green plants, we will have increased clean oxygen allowing for healthier humans. According to the Forest Stewardship Council, plants are known to increase productivity and decrease absenteeism rates in businesses. Studies also show that people report being happier and more content in the work place when there are plants present.

During the past year, Field of Flowers has worked closely with the Women in Distress organization. The mission of Women in Distress is to offer victims of domestic violence with a safe haven, crisis intervention and helpful resources. To support their work, every week Field of Flowers delivers to the Women in Distress in Fort Lauderdale three beautiful floral arrangements to brighten up their offices. Field of Flowers is very grateful to Women in Distress for the valuable work they do and proud to support the organization.

GOING GREEN IN THE GARDEN!

If you’re thinking about going green, a great place to start is in your garden! Doing away with chemicals and pesticides is a major way to help the environment.
We use these chemicals to kill bugs and weeds, but remember that some of the bugs killed are actually good for the flowers and plants. A natural way to rid your garden of pests is to hang nesting boxes with bird seeds. This will attract birds, which eat the small insects that hurt gardens.

You may also want to find a natural method to kill weeds. Some ideas include pulling the leaves off the weeds until they eventually die, blocking sunlight or using old newspapers as mulch to protect them from weeds. Another great tip is to conserve household water. A good way to do this is to water your plants with rain water caught in a rain container. Purchase a container with a lid and keep it covered when it’s not raining to avoid mosquitoes that can damage your plants. You may also consider reducing the size of your garden, planting tougher plants that require less water and use chippings to cover the ground around the garden. Reducing the amount of waste we throw out is also a great eco-friendly tip. Set aside a place for scraps, such as fruit, vegetables, grass cuttings and egg shells to break down. Once broken down, this compost makes an excellent natural fertilizer!
